Some people prefer to live in a small town. Others prefer to live in a big city. Which place wouldyou prefer to live in? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
托福作文满分范文:
I grew up in a small town and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and badsides of both. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten yearsof living in one, I can't imagine ever living in a small town again.
Small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transportation. In a small town, you have to own a car to ensure a comfortable living. You can't get around without one becausethere isn't any kind of public transportation. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensiveparking, but there you have a choice of taking public transportation. It's not free, but it's oftencheaper than driving when you consider gas and time. Especially if you don't have a car, you'rebetter off in the city.
I love the excitement of big cities. Small towns have a slow pace. Large cities mean you have toadapt to a variety of situations, like finding a new route to work or trying a new restaurant. I enjoythat challenge very much. Another pan of the excitement of city living is the variety of culturalactivities available. There is a wide assortment of theatre, music and dance in big cities. These things are rare in small ones.
The final thing I like about large cities is the diversity of the people. The United States is made upof people of different races, religions, abilities, and interests. However, you seldom find such avariety of people in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like mewould quickly become boring.
Of course, security is a concern, and that's one area where small towns are superior to big cities.Still, I would rather be a bit more cautious and live in a large city than to feel secure but bored.

托福作文满分范文:
With the development of human society, people are living longer now. Many factors interactingtogether to enable the longer life. There are three most important causes: the quality of food hasbeen greatly improved; people could have medical services; more and more people realize thatregular sports benefit their health.
The improving quality of our food is the most important factor of the longer life. We could havenot only enough food as we want, but also the healthier food. When we preparing food, we nolonger consider the cost, but pay more attention to the nutritions of the food. With thedevelopment of transportation systems, inland people now could also enjoy seafood and tropicalfruit.
Furthermore, governments are paying more and more money on medical establishments. Citizenscould have medical services more easily. Because of the convenient medical service moreillnesses could be detected at an earlier stage. Also, many illnesses that had been considered fatalcould be cured today. The better detection and curement enable people's longer life.
Last but not least important is that people care more for their own health. Every morning youcould see people doing sports outside. More and more people have realized the saying _life islocomotion_. Regular sports build up a strong body. Naturally, people with stronger body couldresist more deseases.
To sum up, the development of our society causes the longer life of people. People have betterfood and better medical services. And people spend more time on sports to biuld up strongerbodies. As we could predict, people are going to live even longer.

Which one do you think is more beneficial for students in their university? Why? Give detailed examples and reasons. Use your OWN words, do NOT use memorized examples.
In this day and age, it is commonly acknowledged that the four years of college are significant to a person's development. There have been ongoing debates on how students can best take advantage of their time during the long school breaks. People view it differently due to their dissimilar backgrounds and experiences. From my point of view, universities should ask students to volunteer to work in their hometowns or the city where the school is located in that they can make more friends and learn valuable skills.
To begin with, doing voluntary work provides students with an entirely different environment to make connections with people outside of the campus. In other words, while university students spend most of their time at school and in class, they seldom have the chance to go out and make friends with people in the society. By volunteering to work in the city, as a result, students will get to know people who share the same interest with them and have the passion to make their community a better place. For example, last summer I volunteered in my hometown's largest bookstore. During my three weeks working there, I made friends with students of different ages and different backgrounds. Many of them studied in another city, but they all came back to their hometown during summer and wished to make some contribution to the community. I also met people who had already entered the workplace but still actively participating in voluntary work. I was impressed by the passion and vitality I saw on all these people. Some of them even turned out to be one of my best friends.
Furthermore, being a volunteer helps students learn valuable skills that are not taught in the classroom. To be more specific, doing voluntary work requires one to be socially responsible, patient to others, and willing to make contact with strangers. Thus, during the time when students are volunteering, they gradually gain these important skills that will definitely benefit their self-development. For instance, a friend of my mother's is now a leader of a non-profit organization. When I met her last month, she gave me the impression of a very outgoing, warmhearted, and optimistic person. However, she told me that before she participated in voluntary work during her school days, she was extremely shy and introverted. Being a volunteer not only helped her understand her social responsibility but also made her into a helpful, extroverted person because of the constant interaction with other volunteers and people in need. As a result, after seeing the beauty of voluntary work, she founded her own non-profit organization, aiming to help homeless kids in the city.
In conclusion, I believe that working as a volunteer in the students' hometowns or the cities where the universities are located benefits students a lot, because they can make friends with people outside of the campus and learn valuable skills that are not in the textbooks.
In the reading, the writer talks about three possible methods to decrease the salinity level of the Salton Sea. The lecturer in the listening, however, believes that none of the three methods is realistic or practical, and uses specific reasons and details to support his claim.
First, the reading passage states that one way to decrease the level of salinity is to remove salt from the lake using facilities. In the listening, however, the professor argues that this method may lead to serious health risks. After water evaporates, it left behind salt and other potentially toxic chemicals. If those harmful chemicals are spread into the air and breathed into people's bodies, then it will be extremely dangerous. Thus, the idea isn't applicable.
Furthermore, the writer points out that to reduce salinity level, people can dilute the lake with ocean water which is less salty comparing to the lake water. On the contrary, the lecturer disagrees with this idea by suggesting that the cost is too high to be affordable for the local government. In order to dilute the lake, he argues, the construction of pipe lines and canals are necessary to transport ocean water, which lies one hundred kilometers away, into the lake. As a result of this high construction cost, this method proves untenable.
Lastly, the reading passage mentions that walls may be built to separate the lake into multiple parts, and salinity will be reduced only in the largest section. Yet the lecturer finds this method indefensible because those walls won't work for long. The regions where the salinity level is the highest often experience frequent geological activities such as earthquakes, which will destroy the walls. If the walls are broken, water with high salinity level can easily mix back into the low salinity sections. Therefore, building walls is not a potential solution.

It is better for children to grow up in the countryside than in a big city. Do you agree ordisagree? Use specific reasons and examples to develop your essay.
托福作文满分范文:
With the development of the transportation system and some residence institution, the world isgetting smaller and smaller, and people are not restricted in only one area. In addition to theconvenient condition, because there are different places with different cultures, living standards, education environment and other disparity, they are inclined to transfer from one place to theother. Is it better to move around than stay in one place? I believe there are no uniform answers, but in my opinion, I do agree with the claim that to move around is better than to stay in oneplace.
Most people’s growth comes with the transfers in their life. As for me, when I was young I lived ina small county. Because the school in there was not suitable to me, I transferred from my littlecounty to a city to get a better education. As soon as I got to the city, I was amazed that the worldhere was so different here as my hometown .If I still lived in my hometown, it was impossible forme to make the wildest guess at what the real world looked like. The first transfer has made me toimagine my own life and spur on me to go further. With the confidence, I went into a universitywhich I would never think of it before. The university is located in a different city so that I haveto come into another world. Compared with my living city, the one is more complicated in whichthere are different people, more convenient transportation, more competitive environment. I loveall of this very much. Communicating with different students and teachers, I have learned muchfrom them which will benefit me throughout my life and my lifestyle. Now I am in a graduateschool also so beautiful that I will never regret my selection of leaving my hometown because thetransfer has given me a splendid life.
Also, like we students, there are many adults transferring their work place in order to grasp betteropportunities. No matter in industry, in agriculture or in service, workers have rights to choosetheir work companies which leads them to work from place to place and then they accumulateprecious experience and skills to get priorities to others.
People not only transfer in their own country, but also go abroad to get education, work or livethrough the rest of their life in appropriate countries. We can see that many students including mewant to go to the foreign countries to study further and forge ourselves, and that many parentssend their little sons or daughters to foreign countries to study. After all, diverse circumstancesgive persons new experience and broaden their narrow sight, even help them get morecomprehensive understanding of the world, the society and our life itself.
However, some people may say that if people move around, they will pay for much such asmoney, time and energy. It is right to say that it takes one person some time to get used to his orher new environment, new personal relationship which indeed influences the growth of children, the efficiency of our work and the stability of our society and family. And I have to admit thatpeople should make considerate plans before changing their places and may not transfer aimlesslyand frequently. But I think sometimes it is just all the friction that has made the world wealthierand more beautiful. Therefore, I still think it is better to travel around than to live in one place.
